Embrace The Dark Side: Using Wikipedia to Teach Information Literacy

Wednesday, December 05, 2012 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM)

In many classrooms, Wikipedia is seen by students as their best resource and by teachers as a barrier to thoughtful and in-depth research. The presenter sees Wikipedia as an incredibly effective and relevant tool for instruction and research. This webinar will feature many techniques that promote critical thinking and the importance of information literacy to students. Attendees will leave with practical ways to incorporate Wikipedia into instruction through the use of discussions, demonstrations, active learning exercises, and more.

Presenter Biography: In addition to her MLIS, Jean Cook has physics, math, and computer science degrees. At the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, GA, she serves as an instruction librarian and reference coordinator. Her professional interests include effective instruction techniques, innovative ways to use established and affordable technologies, and quantitative assessment.
